Singing has been used as a tool for emotional expression and social bonding probably since humans have existed. It’s super fun, completely free, and comes highly recommended by yours truly. Singing doesn’t just help people connect with others; it helps them connect with different parts of themselves. I find that singing helps me connect with my feminine side.

How to Obtain

The process of finding your voice is more complicated than simply having vocal folds built into your throat. It is an emotional journey. You have to work past that voice in your head telling you that you can’t sing, which can be extremely difficult. The truth is that you can sing, your voice is uniquely beautiful, and you don’t have to sing “in tune” to reap its many physical, energetic, and social benefits. You owe it to yourself! Consider singing more often on your own, or find a community choir to sing with. Always drink plenty of water to stay hydrated when singing!

How to Learn

The process of gaining skill in singing lies in the ability to notice what it feels like when you sing. Keep trying different adjustments of your jaw, tongue, throat, and diaphragm until it feels comfortable and you are using your breath efficiently. Avoid making adjustments that are forceful or abrupt—this will probably add tension to various parts of your mechanism and hinder vocal production. For inexperienced singers, it is best to breathe deeply and use that breath liberally to sing out towards some external object. Singing softly can make pitch control more difficult due to a lack of breath pressure. One of the best ways to get better at singing is to do it a lot!
